Product Description
For nearly a decade, Bill Heavey, an outdoorsman marooned in suburbia, has written the “Sportsman’s Life” column on the back page of Field & Stream, where he does for hunting and fishing what David Feherty does for golf and Lewis Grizzard did for the South. His work is adored by readers—one proclaims him “the greatest sportswriter who has ever walked the planet”—and his peers have recognized his work with three prestigious National Magazine Award nominations. If You Didn’t Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat? is the first collection of Heavey’s hilarious observations on life as an enthusiastic (but often hapless) outdoorsman. Whether he’s hunting cougars in the southwest desert, scheming to make his five-year-old daughter fall in love with fishing, or chronicling his father’s slow decline through the lens of the numerous dogs he’s owned over seventy-five years, Heavey is a master at blending humor and pathos—and wide-ranging outdoor enthusiasms—into a poignant and potent stew. Funny, warmhearted, and supremely entertaining, this book is an uproarious addition to the literature of the outdoors. The paperback edition features two new pieces.

Captures the genuine mood of all things hunting October 21, 2008 Bill Heavey is an incredible writer. No, not everything he writes is laugh-out-loud funny...and it's not supposed to be. In so many of the bumbles, backfires, mishaps, and defeat turned to sudden and unexpected triumph, he lets us outdoor enthusiasts see ourselves. In an age of hunting where one-upmanship is constant and the magnificence of our quarry is often reduced to an antler score, we need a writer like Heavey. He captures the intangibles that keep us going out season after season...things we just can't put into words. Read the chapter "The Promised Land" to the end and tell me there's not a surge of emotion rushing over you once finished.
I highly recommend "If You Didn't Bring Jerky..." .
something you can relate to July 7, 2008 Stumbled across this after reading one Bill's columns in Field & Stream & having a friend tell me he had a book. Have been reading a story or two each day...makes a great bathroom book. My favorite is the one I read yesterday about Bill taking his preschool age daughter "hunting" (helping him scout for deer sign) and then coming home & watching big buck videos together. Kind of reminded me of myself when I was little. All in all it's a great book for anyone who loves the outdoor lifestyle.
There's A Laugh on Page 59 May 26, 2008 I'm serious, I made a mental note of the only laugh in the book. In an introduction it is said Pat Mcmanus goes for the belly laugh while this author goes for a chuckle. Chuckle is apprently a codeword for humourless. The author goes into more tecnical details about hunting and fishing gadgets than Pat does so if you like reading about junk to carry on a hunt this will be a plus. But if your are looking for a humorous take on the outdoors look elsewhere.
Just hilarious May 24, 2008 I have been reading Bill Heavey's column in Field and Stream for years, and he has never failed to entertain me. His book has not disappointed me, it is packed with the same brand of tongue-in-cheek humor. If you are an outdoorsman, you willl definately relate to Heavey's soul baring escapades. I highly recommend this book
Fantastic book March 2, 2008 A great book. Very well written. I teach journalism and English and use examples from this book often. Poetic, poignant, and just plain fun.
