The concise, practical and well presented info in this book can help you take two trips to Scotland. I bought a second book for my son because I didn't want to part with mine.

A few years ago I and three friends made the "once in a lifetime golfing trip" to Scotland using the services of a tour operator. We had a really great time and played several of the name courses including St Andrews Old Course, Kingsbarn, Troon and others. We also paid top dollar. This year we are making another trip to Scotland but doing the planning and arranging ourselves. It is really amazing how easy it has been to schedule tee times, accommodations and car rental using the information in Mr Ferguson's book. I believe we also saved a considerable amount of money. The book is easy to read, in fact its fun to read, and I keep referring back to it time and again. The book is absolutely a "must buy" if you are even thinking of making a trip to Scotland, and definitely you must read it before making a call to a tour operator.

Before things become critical let me state one thing. This is the best single resource for planning your own golf trip from the USA to Scotland, though there are a few limitations.
1) Scotland has over 500 golf courses. The 68 selected in the book include all of the most expensive courses in Scotland. The book advises to think of this trip as " your first golf trip to Scotland" rather than the "golf trip of a lifetime." But subsequently orients the reader to the most expensive courses available. Notable areas that are barely covered in the book are the Northeast Coast with excellent courses such as Reay, Wick, Buckpool, Hopeman, Cullen, Arbroath and Inverllochy, though the author does mention Fraserburgh and Duff House Royal. Also the municipal courses of Aberdeen are not mentioned at all, but include a course designed by Alister Mackenzie and the original links of the Royal Aberdeen Club. Also there are 2 Fore 1 , Green Fee and Green Free vouchers where you can play many courses at 50% discount that are excellent courses. This is mentioned by the author but not noted in the course descriptions in the book.
2) The lodging selections by the author also include the most expensive lodging in each town. Get on Google map or trip advisor and you can find excellent lodging in most towns for less than 50 pounds per person per night, some for less than 30 pounds.
If you have the funds and want royal treatment then by all means enjoy. However if you wish to explore Scotland, rub elbows with the locals and get more bang for the buck, start with this book and get on the web and start looking around. You can have a great trip for less!

I have been to Scotland six times and utilized "Golf in Scotland" for my trip planning and reservations the last four times. The book is outstanding - all phone numbers, email addresses, and visitor policies for golfers are precise and accurate. I also believe the recommendations for golf courses, car rentals, hotel-B&B's and general travel tips are first rate.
This is the best and most insightful travel guide I have found, and it is all you will need to enjoy a great trip to Scotland. For the first timer, if you decide you want a professional to plan your trip, Allan's rates are very reasonable and he will fulfill all your requirements.

Ferguson has written a "must-have" for anyone thinking of golfing in Scotland. If you want to save a ton of money, stay in quaint hotels and B&Bs, and play the fabulous hidden gems that Scotland has to offer, buy this book. Allan Ferguson has done the leg work for you.
