Another success from Lonely Planet! December 2, 2008 The Maui guide is another great example of the Lonely Planet guide books. Their "Best Maui Experiences" section has me thinking I need to get back to the island asap!
I have to admit that I'm a fan of the Lonley Planet. They have a knack for giving you a quick overview of a city and the clues to developing your itinerary. Some might complain that they lack the long, thorough reviews that you find in some guidebooks, but I prefer the brevity of Lonely Planet's approach. They include lots of current information and a mercifully brief overview of the history of the locale. Their books are well illustrated and logically laid out. They're also pretty durable, which can be handy on a trip.
Your Next Vacation! December 2, 2008 If you're planning on going to Maui, don't leave without this very useful Lonely Planet guide, with its 32 themed itineraries to give you ideas on how to best spend your time, loads of maps, and full color photos. If you aren't planning on going to Maui, after looking through this book, you may change your mind.
Maui has such diverse landscapes, from the arid Haleakala National Park, awesome for hiking (they suggest getting up extra early to see the sunrise from the summit), to the incredibly lush 'Iao Valley, with its waterbird sanctuaries and tropical aquarium. And of course, the beaches! This is beauty in its most sublime perfection.
The inside of the front cover gives you lots of handy info you'll need at your fingertips (conversions, exchange rates, business hours, etc.) and then the book is divided Into sections of "Outdoor Activities," "Green Maui " (environmental issues), "Lahaina," "West Maui," "Central Maui," "South Maui," "Northshore and Upcountry," "Haleakala," "Road to Hana," "East Maui," "Side Trips: Lana'i and Moloka'i." Each section has its pick of where to eat and where to sleep, which includes campsites. The book finishes with the stuff you have to know, like an overview of the history and culture, food and drink, an events calendar, transportation, and much more. And if you go to the Lonely Planet website, you can download a handy Hawaiian Language and Glossary for free. Mahalo Lonely Planet!
I Can't Wait to Use this on my next trip! December 1, 2008 I don't have a trip to Maui on the books right now, but this new guide from Lonely Planet has me scouring online ticket prices in anticipation.
In full color and packed with useful information, Maui by Lonely Planet should be in the carry-on of anyone planning a trip to my favorite Hawaiian island. The entire chapter devoted to the Road to Hana alone is reason enough to choose this comprehensive, yet realistic, tour book.
Sample itineraries, historical and cultural perspectives, and affordably priced dining and lodging options (including camping) make this a great choice for budget conscious travelers.
Excellent tour book for your maui trip December 1, 2008 This is a great guide book for Maui. I like the way it is organized by area and I really like all the short stories and history sections throughout the book. The book lists 32 themed itineraries and I plan on checking a few of those out shortly when I am there visiting. This book will help me plan out my second trip to maui so I can make sure I get to see and do everything I want to. The restaurant guides look pretty good. While they do not rate the food, they do give a description of the food type and average costs per meal.
Useful Guidebook November 30, 2008 I generally like the Lonely Planet series, so I thought I'd check this out. True to form, it has a lot of good general information for the person who is first traveling to Maui. The book has ideas for itineraries, plenty of various restaurants and sports bars, festivals and whatnot, but doesn't cover everything despite the ridiculously tiny print and the 304 pages. In other words, you'd probably need a book twice this size to cover everything about Maui, Moloka'i and Lana'i.
Still, this book has some great recommendations. It has best Maui experiences, which includes best beach, best sweet shop, best hike, best road trip and best shaved ice. It has tons of recommendations for outdoor adventures. And it has itineraries for those who have three days, five days and more. How cool is that?
Overall it tries to be everything to everyone and falls short for people with different expectations. It's worthwhile using this guide, especially if this is your first time in Maui.
