2 out of 5 stars Not the best guide book   July 4, 2008
This book is good for general information only. There is not enough detail about any city or country to be useful for planning a vacation. Better to buy a guide book for each country you plan to visit.

2 out of 5 stars Hopelessly Out Of Date   April 19, 2008
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

This book is hopelessly out of date. We bought it for our trip to Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and the Falklands.

To give an example, in Ushaia following the books instructions, we went to the Martial glacier only to find that it receded years ago and the chairlift no longer runs because it can't reach the glacier anymore.

Prices for museums and other attractions are given in US dollars (which are obviously out of date) but even the prices of museums (in local currency) are significantly different than those posted at the museums. One museum was at least 200% higher than those listed in the book.

1 out of 5 stars About how to disrespect other cultures in the world.   July 12, 2007

It shows a complete lack of knowledge about Latin American cuisine, which was expressed by disrespectful comments.

To the author: Yes, "Arepas" is one of the venezuelan main dishes and that's the reason you can find the arepa everywhere.......and they also offer other great variety of dishes made out of: beef, fish, pork, etc.
What other kind of food were yo expecting to found during your trip to Venezuela?. And I think that It's the kind of meat or food you could find in many other places around the world: pork, fish, beef, etc.
You should have more respect about any other culture you will get to visit. Be more open minded, have more respect and do not criticize the same things or kind of food you easily could find in your own country.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide book to South America   August 30, 2006

This is a great guide book for South America. I was looking at many of them, and thought this was the most useful for how to get around, different levels of accomodations in case you wanted high end, mid or budget...really gives you a good sense. I looked at Lonely Planet, which I normally like, but feel the South America book was lacking. I also looked at Footprint for Peru and Ecaudor...but those were hard to follow for the price ranges of hotels as they use a lettering system. I have used Frommers in the past and will continue to do so for future trips as it gives you a balanced approach and extra tips on where you may want to spend more money for the location or safety.
