Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A novice attempt in presenting the golf courses of an exotic country.   February 24, 2006

This coffee-table book simply does not live up to its title. It is not written by a golfer or golf aficionado, and it is not photographed by someone who understands the true nature of the challenges, intricacies, and architecture that makes the space a paradise for those who love the game.

Some of the photographs are indeed, beautiful. As they should, given the type of book "Campos de Golf en Colombia" is --belonging on a table as decorative display. But the collection of photographs does not work thematically, and most pictures do not say much about the course they portray.

Along the same lines, I found the narrative and the text descriptions ambiguous, vague, and uninformative. In a similar fashion to the photography, it is overtly stylized, but lacks sustenance.

The infuriating thing is the lack of focus, attention, and research put into making this book. It never takes into consideration the needs and desires of golfers, nor does it provide accurate information of each course. For example, we never learn the history of the game in the country, much less the specific history of any of the courses, the architects who worked on them, the players who have walked down their fairways, or the elemental points of the signature holes. What about information on how to go about playing any of these courses? None. Rarely are we exposed about the natural properties exclusive to a given course, but often times we are reminded that "for this course a player will use almost all clubs in his bag". As a golfer, I find that line a bit offensive.
To top it off, there are inconsistencies in factual information due to serious lack of attention to detail. I'm not saying small typos or yardage mistakes, I'm talking about par fives with less than 300 yards, followed a couple of holes later by a par 3 in excess of 400 yards. (Refer to Country Bogota scorecard). Embarrassing!

It seems as if some graphic designer, a photographer, and a business man got together on a brainstorming session and went "let's do a golf book about Colombia -it'll sell to golfers, and Colombians living abroad; target markets with money. We'll have to make it a coffee-table book, that way it'll be simpler, it'll masquerade the lack of sustenance by good design. We'll interview someone at each course, we'll get a scorecard to post any relevant information, and we'll lay out some pictures. Okay. Let's start tomorrow and finish by the end of the month."

About me: I golf and I've done it in Colombia as a guest at various country clubs. I wanted a book that truly explored the Country's beautiful courses. I wanted a book that every once in a while I could open and rekindle good times, or learn about, and fantasize over courses I would enjoy playing. At least I wanted a book my friends would pick up and be curious about its content. I did not get that. I was given a $40 book that has been looked at once and is collecting dust under other much better coffee-table books.
