Fabulous April 15, 1999 36 out of 40 found this review helpful
It bothers me when I talk to people and they say "there's nothing to do on the islands and everything is so commercialized" We always try to go to the out of way places that locals tell us about. The last trip to Hawaii (Nov. 1997) we found the book Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed and really found some great places that most tourist would never know about. Since then I have recommended to several and say it is a must if you are going to Hawaii. The book is broken down in a very nice way and easy to follow. The maps are very easy to read and the color photos make you want to see it all. I hope they come out with one for each of the other islands. With staying in a condo and fixing a picnic lunch at breakfast we had truly enjoyable days really seeing Hawaii. Many a day we found a picnic table with great view and lot of time close to the ocean with the sound of it. This year we hope to go to Kauai or Maui so am hunting book for them so we can really see that island. We have been to all 3 several times but not like the '97 trip.
The best guidebook we have used! January 24, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This guide provides excellent suggestions of out of the way places to explore, especially if you like exploring natural spots on your own. There are also honest recommendations of places to eat (great discoveries of good food in places that don't look inviting!) and commerical entertainment or trips. Real gems are highlighted - and accurately rated. If you just want to stay in a big hotel and lounge in the pool etc, don't bother, but if you want to see the great variety of the big island, get this!
Best Guide Book I've Ever Used December 29, 1998 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
If you're considering a visit to the Big Island, get a copy of this book. They have a web site with updates to the book, and loads of great links to sites with info about the islands. We found this book invaluable as we planned our daily activities. One of the many reasons we hated to head home was that we wouldn't get to continue to use this fabulous tome. It's got to be the *best* guide I've ever seen. The maps are very detailed, accurate, and easy to follow; the inside tips and reviews are all superb. All written in an engaging prose. Highly recommended.
This book gives away all the Big Island's secrets!!! November 1, 1998 I now live on the Big Island of Hawaii. This book unlocks all the places that are not available to the everyday tourist (or local). If you really want to "DO" the big island, you need this book!!! Aloha, Glen
Written by people who really know the Big Island September 30, 1998 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Doughty and Friedman provide the reader with loads of helpful and in-depth information. We spent a week on the island following their advice on snorkeling, kayaking, shopping, great food finds, historical sites, and how to treat jellyfish stings! I can't recommend this book enough. (And judging from how often we saw it in the local shops, Hawaiians must appreciate it, too.) And had we bought it at Amazon.com, we would have saved some money.
